At The End Of My Roll

Some are at the end of their rope. I am at the end of my roll.

It all started when our trip to the Canadian Rockies ended. We had rented a car and wanted it to be squeaky clean when we returned it, so we bought a roll of recycled paper towels to wash it with. We used only a small percentage of the towels.

My boyfriend didn’t want the remainder. I felt sorry for the neglected paper towel roll. I packed it in my knapsack and, when the time came, declared it on my Customs form. The paper towels were excited by all the attention.

Back home, we both had new roles to play. My roll fit right in, hanging around the rack in the kitchen. I don’t usually buy paper towels, so its presence has been a special treat.

But saying goodbye has been hard. I tried to make the roll last as long as possible. We’ve had a good relationship over the last five + months.

You could say we were on a roll.

  1. A drum roll, please, to award you the eco–environmental–conversationist award for sparing other trees and fibers! The photo merits display as a modernist installation, with the curl of the towel placed just so, the cardboard holder making the eye follow the bisecting planes.
