A Novel Thought or Two

I’m reading The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce, her marvelous sequel to the equally fabulous novel, The Unlikely Pilgramage of Harold Fry, and I had to share these two quotes:

p.60
“If only memory were a library with everything stored where it should be.”

p. 255
“I gather Finty has a thousand followers,” said a soft voice beside me. … “What do you do with a thousand followers?” [Mr. Henderson] settled into the chair beside mine. “I had a wife and a best friend. That was all I needed.”

Do you have favorite quotes from books?

Author:

I am a rather obscure 14th C. poet, whose work has been translated into over thirty dialects of gibberish. I now spend my days translating from the gibberish into English and back again, as need be.

  1. I appreciate your asking your readers about their favorite quotes. Liking a poignant nonfiction account of the author’s family, I submit a quote by Edmund DeWaal, from “The Hare with Amber Eyes”: “It is not just things that carry stories with them. Stories are a kind of thing, too. Stories and objects share something, a patina. . . . Perhaps patina is a process of rubbing back so that the essential is revealed. . . .”
